1.Leaves, riches in phenolic compounds, have astringent and antimicrobial effects.
2. Pomegranate fruit extracts have been shown to possess significant antioxidant activity. The mixed soluble polyphenolic compounds including anthrocyanins polyphenols, catechins, ellagic tannins (Punicalagin), and gallic and ellagic acids show significantly antioxidant activity superior to red wine, green tea and the synthetic antioxdant, bulyrated hydroxyanisole (BHA). Further, these fractions were shown to inhibit enzyme cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase in vitro. Flavonoids in pomegranate also inhibit enzyme tyrosinase.
